For 40 years the American Needlepoint Guild (ANG) has been educating its members about needlepoint, now ANG would like to educate others as well. ANG's celebration of needlepoint and samplers is a three-year event, coinciding with the annual Seminars in 2012, 2013, and 2014. Coast to coast for the coming three years, you are invited to join us for --
A "JOURNEY WITH NEEDLEART From the Past to the Future."
The activities at each of the venues will concentrate on bringing the art of the needle to the public, as well as to ANG members.
A JOURNEY WITH NEEDLE ART -- From the Past to the Future" consists of three aspects during the three-year event: (1) an exhibition of needlepoint each year; (2) an auction of original needlepoint pieces in 2012; and (3) a sampler competition designed to exemplify samplers being worked today and to demonstrate the evolution of samplers as needleart in 2014. The Philadelphia Art Alliance (PAA), located near the site of ANGs 40th anniversary celebration seminar, will host the first events from August 3 to August 31, 2012.
Displaying contemporary creativity and talent side by side with the marvellous work of our predecessors, in formal exhibitions will allow the visitors to trace the evolution of needlepoint style, techniques, threads, and subject matter from the past, to the present, and into the future.
"A JOURNEY WITH NEEDLEART- From the Past to the Future" is an event that needs your support. Your job is to tell your friends, plan to attend, and get to work on designing your own sampler for the 2014 competition.
August 2012 will be a special time in Philadelphia. From August 3-31 ANG and the Philadelphia Art Alliance (PAA) will work together to bring needlepoint from the past, present, and future to gallery visitors. At the PAA gallery, 251 South 18th Street, you will be enthralled by a wonderful display of historic samplers, contemporary samplers, and originals for auction.
The evening of Saturday, August 25, 2012 will begin with a reception for those attending the auction with special recognition of those who provided pieces for the auction, those who underwrote “"A Journey with Needleart –---From the Past to the Future" ,” and those who have previously been strong financial supporters of ANG.
The auction pieces will be the original needlepoint pieces by professional designers and artists.
There will be a program listing the auction pieces with pertinent information. A professional auctioneer will enthrall the audience and whip up the sales.
The exhibitions, the first of which will be open to the public from August 3rd to August 31st in Philadelphia, will include original needlepoint by professional designers, teachers, and stitchers that demonstrates the art of needlepoint today.
A catalog with color photographs of all the pieces in the exhibition will be printed and available for sale during each of the three exhibitions.

Samplers evoke thoughts of alphabets, rows (bands) of stitched designs, and small distinct areas of designs with traditional meaning. So what are samplers and what is the definition of a sampler?
Research, etymology and printed definitions would say samplers are examples or studies or collections all for the increased knowledge of the stitcher. Samplers were originally identified as a sample of each new stitch learned by the child on a single piece of fabric.
However, in todays world, many definitions of words are being redefined techniques are changing, materials available are changing, and, as a result, our lives and our artistic endeavors are changing.
What does remain the same is the need for needle artists to express themselves and to share their creative talents and love of needlework with others. This often involves a variety of stitches, threads, grounds, and techniques.
The sampler competition in 2014 will consist of original designs (no reproductions) that will exemplify early 21st century samplers. All entries must conform to the ANG definition of needlepoint, needlework executed by hand with a threaded needle on a readily countable ground. Entries in the sampler competition will demonstrate the sampler work that is being done today, showcase the work of the past, and presage the work of the future.
There will be monetary and other prizes awarded for the best samplers.
Criteria and guidelines for the competition will be posted on the web site in the near future.
